Can I upgrade my DOS version of Student CHIP to a Windows version?

Yes. Send e-mail to Ruth@ZetaData.com or call 800-227-6413 to request an upgrade.

If you have adopted one of the CHIP workbooks or have purchased Student CHIP from Zeta Data, you also qualify for a convenience license. If you would like to install the Windows version on a network or allow your students to copy the installation disks, please indicate this request when you ask for the upgrade disks. Include your name, your institution, the course name, the semester or term during which the course is taught, the name, author, and publisher of the workbook, and the number of copies adopted. Zeta Data will send you the Windows upgrade with the appropriate data sets and a license permitting network installation or multiple copying of the disks.

What are the differences between Student CHIP and the full CHIP software?

Student CHIP is a simplified version of the full CHIP software. Student CHIP offers the basic table-building and analysis capabilities, while full CHIP offers more statistical analysis and data manipulation features.

Student CHIP is designed for use by beginning students, while full CHIP is more appropriate for research and use by instructors and advanced students.

Specific differences:

Full CHIP allows you to create your own CHIP-format data sets directly from the application, while Student CHIP does not.
Full CHIP for Windows includes the capabilities of the Pathfinder application: regression, effect analysis, and classical path analysis.
Graphics. Full CHIP includes the specialized plotting display Fishnet that is not included in the student version.
Full CHIP includes some statistical analysis options, such as interactions and log odds, which are not included in Student CHIP.
Full CHIP offers options for modifying data that are not included in Student CHIP. These include merging of two or more variables, changing variable and category labels, editing cells, and changing the sample size.
Full CHIP includes more extensive options for direct standardization than Student CHIP does.

My copy of CHIP doesn't work properly with Mac OS 8.1 or OS 9. What can I do?

You probably need an upgrade to Student CHIP Version 1.58 or full CHIP Version 3.64. Call 800-227-6413 or email Ruth@ZetaData.com to request a free upgrade.

If you already have the most recent version, make sure the Platinum setting is turned off. Turn off any extensions that include the term 'FPU.'

The mouse doesn't work when I run DOS Student CHIP under Windows NT. What can I do?

Call 800-227-6413 or email Ruth@ZetaData.com to request an upgrade to the Windows version.

Even with the mouse disabled, you can run Student CHIP. Use the function keys to access the menus: F1 for the leftmost menu, F2 for the second, etc. Once a menu is displayed, you can use the up and down arrow keys to select your choice. Once your choice is highlighted, press Enter to make your selection.

What are the size limits for CHIP data sets?

CHIP data sets use cell frequencies rather than raw data, and there is no limit to the number of cases in a CHIP data set. This feature makes CHIP especially convenient for large data sets, such as Census files.

The number of cells in a CHIP data set is determined by the product of the number of categories in each of the variables. Thus, if you have a data set with 4 variables and 3 categories in each variable, the total number of cells is 3 X 3 X 3 X 3 = 81.

Full CHIP and Windows Student CHIP place no absolute limit on the number of cells in a CHIP dataset -- but be aware that this number can become very large very quickly. Response tends to slow when the total number of cells exceeds 10,000. The DOS and Macintosh versions of Student CHIP place a limit of 2,048 cells in a data set. All of the data sets available with curricular materials fall within this limit.

CHIP can also read text files of raw data with up to 4500 cases. The ReadMe files on the CHIP disks describe the layout of these files.
