Student CHIP

Student CHIP is a microcomputer program for the statistical analysis of contingency tables (cross-tabulations). Student CHIP is designed for use by novices in social science data analysis. It is a simplified version of CHIPendale with Pathfinder, which includes more advanced features.

CHIPendale’s author, James A. Davis, is a recognized pioneer in the use of quantitative methods in social science research and teaching. CHIPendale embodies Dr. Davis’ approach to teaching beginning data analysis with some of his own innovations. James A. Davis is Professor of Sociology, Emeritus, Harvard University, Senior Lecturer, University of Chicago, and Principal Investigator, NORC General Social Survey.

CHIPendale has been used at hundreds of colleges and universities in a variety of courses, including introductory sociology, Marriage and the Family, social problems, sociology of education, 20th century U.S. history, the U.S. political system, and American electoral politics.

Hundreds of CHIP datasets from the General Social Survey and U.S. Census data are available. In addition, many professors who have used CHIPendale have created their own text material and datasets for use with CHIPendale. CHIPendale lets you use stored data sets or create your own. In addition, the student version allows students to enter their own survey data.

For many students, CHIPendale is the first introduction to social science research and data analysis. CHIPendale requires no previous computer knowledge; its interface is menu-driven and intuitive. CHIPendale is designed to be primarily a tool for inquiry — it’s not just for classroom demonstrations by the instructor.
